Illusion of Linear Perception by Kidest OMૐ

Linear focus and linear expectations, waiting for events to unfold in a linear sequence in an expected way, limits you from accessing the infinite possibilities available to you in this Now-moment. Linear perception takes your past experiences and projects them forward to create the illusion of a continuous linear experience, and creates the impression that you in this moment are an effect of the past.

But where you are and who you are in this moment, in this instant, is beyond the limits of linear perception. You are in this moment outside of time, outside of the movement of thought from past, present, to future. In this moment you have available to you infinite outcomes, infinite possibilities for what can happen in the next moment. Infinite possibilities come “before” this moment and infinite possibilities are all that are beyond this moment. The question to ask yourself is: is this how I perceive and project my reality, as a vast field of infinite possibilities?

Your reality can shift in the blink of an eye. How often have unexpected events shown up in your reality to stretch your idea of what can happen? This happens all the time. Most of what you experience moment to moment are unexpected and unpredictable moments. If you looked at your reality through the eyes of innocent perception, you will see that nothing about the way your moments unfold is accurately predicted by your conscious mind. Things are always popping up, phone calls, letters, situations, events, that you didn’t project or predict. Events and outcomes disappear and new unexpected one’s appear instantly.

There are an infinite number of directions that you can orient your consciousness toward, to make visible a new reality, a different outcome and experience from what you were experiencing a fraction of a second ago. But when you are participating in the projections of your mind, the choices made known to you are only the limited ones. Unless you are consciously making yourself aware of what you are expecting and how you are expecting to experience your reality in the next moment, you will throw yourself into the limitations of using the known to define and confine the infinite Unknown. And it is looking at your reality through your own conscious limits that veils the constant occurrence of unexpected and unpredicted moments.

"For Zen students the most important thing is not to be dualistic. Our 'original mind' includes everything within itself. It is always rich and sufficient within itself. You should not lose your self-sufficient state of mind. This does not mean a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind. If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities; in the expert's mind there are few." - Shunryu Suzuki (Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind)

Being aware of your own mental tendencies is not a practice only for students of Zen and mindfulness, but for any being localized in this human experience. Your own conscious awareness of your inner processing and what you are projecting and creating within your own mind, makes a great difference for your reality and how you experience it.

Whatever you think is going to happen in the next moment is a regurgitation of something you have experienced before. You are not projecting new information into the moments ahead. You are not creating anything new from the projections of your day to day mind. Your conscious finite mind exists within the limits of the known, within the boundaries of what has already happened and what has already become visible. All that your conscious mind can offer you is information, pictures, and expectations based on what has already manifested into the world of form. Yet you right now exist in a field of infinite potentialities.

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It's the source of all true science." Albert Einstein

So you want to again and again awaken to the recognition that anything can happen in this next instant. This next instant is full of unexpected and unpredictable occurrences. Anything can happen. Everything can happen. In a split second, with the blink of an eye, in an instant anything can show up. Allow yourself to transcend the illusion of a linear unfolding of reality. Do this by awakening yourself to the realization that your life is already full of the unexpected and the unpredictable. Cultivate this awareness and you will strengthen your ability to shift and slip into more desirable, surprising, wonderful moments.
